Black star, white star
In Unicode names, “black” means filled and “white” means outline: ★ (U+2605 BLACK STAR) and ☆ (U+2606 WHITE STAR). The many-pointed stars and sparkles come from the Dingbats block, part of Unicode since Unicode 1.1 (1993).
How to type a star
On Windows, press Windows + . (period) while typing and open the Symbols tab of the emoji panel. Symbols that have a Windows Alt code are listed in the table: hold Alt and type the number on the numeric keypad.
On a Mac, press Fn/Globe + E (or choose Edit > Emoji & Symbols) to open the Character Viewer, and search for the symbol's name.
