Tiny (superscript) letters
Tap any letter to copy it on its own. Hover or long-press to see its official Unicode name.
Unicode has no tiny text version of Q q, so they stay as typed (dashed boxes above).
Small caps letters
Tap any letter to copy it on its own. Hover or long-press to see its official Unicode name.
Unicode has no small caps version of Q X q x, so they stay as typed (dashed boxes above).
Subscript letters
Tap any letter to copy it on its own. Hover or long-press to see its official Unicode name.
Unicode has no subscript version of B C D F G Q W Y Z b c d f g q w y z, so they stay as typed (dashed boxes above).
Three kinds of small text
- Tiny text (ᵗⁱⁿʸ) uses superscript letters. Most are “modifier letters” that linguists use in phonetic transcription, such as ᵃ (
U+1D43MODIFIER LETTER SMALL A). - Small caps (ꜱᴍᴀʟʟ ᴄᴀᴘꜱ) are capital letters at lowercase height, many of them from the International Phonetic Alphabet, like ʙ (
U+0299LATIN LETTER SMALL CAPITAL B). - Subscript (ₛᵤbₛcᵣᵢₚₜ) sits below the line, like the 2 in H₂O.
Why some letters stay normal
Unicode added these letters one by one, for phonetics and science, not to make complete alphabets. So a few letters are missing in each style, and we say which instead of swapping in a random lookalike. The notes under each alphabet above list them.
Before you paste
It's different text, not just a different look. To a computer, 𝒽ℯ𝓁𝓁ℴ is not the word hello. Keep the words people search for (your name, your shop, your username) in plain letters.
Screen readers may stumble. They can announce each styled letter by its Unicode name (“mathematical bold capital H”) or skip it, which makes the text hard to follow for people who rely on them. Use styles for a few words, not for whole paragraphs.
It can count double. Many styled letters (all the cursive, bold, italic and gothic ones) live outside the first 65,536 Unicode characters, so they take two UTF-16 code units. Web forms that limit length with the HTML maxlength attribute count those units, and X counts these letters as two characters each toward its 280-character limit.
Frequently asked questions
Why isn't there a tiny q?
A superscript small q was only added to Unicode in 2021, and fonts made before then don't have it. We leave q as a normal letter so it never shows up as a box.
Why does subscript only work for some letters?
Unicode only has subscript versions of a, e, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, u, v and x. The other letters stay as typed.
What's the difference between tiny text and small caps?
Tiny text floats near the top of the line, like an exponent. Small caps sit on the line and look like capitals that shrank to lowercase height.
