Lookalikes to avoid
These look like a degree sign but are different characters:
| Character | Unicode name | Code point | What it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| º | MASCULINE ORDINAL INDICATOR | U+00BA | Spanish, Portuguese and Italian ordinals, as in 1º. Often mistaken for °. |
| ˚ | RING ABOVE | U+02DA | A spacing accent mark (the ring of å). |
| ∘ | RING OPERATOR | U+2218 | Function composition in math, as in f ∘ g. |
| ⁰ | SUPERSCRIPT ZERO | U+2070 | A raised zero, as in 10⁰. |
| ℃ | DEGREE CELSIUS | U+2103 | A single “°C” character kept for compatibility with East Asian character sets; its standard decomposition is ° followed by C, which is the better choice. |
Temperatures and angles
The degree sign marks both. With angles it goes right after the number, with no space: 30°. The International System of Units puts a space between a number and a unit, so temperatures are written 25 °C, while angles keep the exception of no space.
Degree sign or ordinal indicator?
° (U+00B0 DEGREE SIGN) and º (U+00BA MASCULINE ORDINAL INDICATOR) look alike, especially in small text, but º is a letter used for ordinals in Spanish and Portuguese (1º = primero). Searching, sorting and screen readers treat them differently, so use ° for degrees.
